Rugby: Joseph non-committal over Highlanders

Jamie Joseph knows nothing about coaching the Highlanders next year but says like any coach he would be interested in moving up to the next level.

Joseph said he had been in Japan for the past two weeks and he had not heard from anyone about coaching the Highlanders next year.

Highlanders coach Glenn Moore has one year to go on his contract but, with the side finishing a disappointing 12th this year, his future must be in doubt, along with his assistants, Peter Russell and Barry Matthews.

The franchise is undergoing an extensive review at the moment.

Question marks over Moore's future have led to speculation over who would want the hot seat but few seem to be rushing to put their hands up.

Southland pair Simon Culhane and David Henderson kicked for touch when asked to confirm they were interested in the job, saying they would not make any comment until the review process was over.

Joseph's name has also been mentioned as a candidate but he said yesterday he had not even thought about the position.

"At this stage I'm just embarking on a campaign with the New Zealand Maori and I've just come back from two weeks in Japan where I was coaching," he said.

"So I've really had no time to even think about it. It's not something I've considered at all.

"But Otago rugby is something that I'm pretty fond of because of my time down there."

Joseph played 68 games for Otago from 1989 to 1995 and also played 30 games for the All Blacks, including 20 tests, before he left to play in Japan at the end of the 1995 season.

He played for Japan in the 1999 World Cup but returned to New Zealand and, in 2008, started coaching Wellington which he has led to two provincial championship finals.

Joseph has just signed up for another couple of years with Wellington but said like any coach he wanted to move to the next level.

Joseph applied for the Hurricanes coaching job but lost out to Mark Hammett.

He is obviously rated by the New Zealand Rugby Union, having been appointed New Zealand Maori coach in its centenary year.
