The Spartans 10s tournament is shaping up to be bigger than last year, tournament organiser Shane Waldron said.

The event is in its third year and gets under way at Miller Park this morning.

"It is always a massive day and I think it is going to be even bigger this year," Waldron said.

"We’ll get thousands there across the day, I think."

There are 15 teams entered across two grades and last year the tournament attracted a couple of thousand people "easy".

Admission is free but all the proceeds, which are raised through the various fundraising efforts, will go to the Rugby Foundation to assist injured players.

"We always like to crack that 10k (thousand) mark. We got there a couple of years ago and last year we just didn’t quite make it.

"We’ll shoot for that again and see how we go."

The open grade has been split into two pools of five teams. The top two teams will contest the final later in the day. There is also a masters grade of five teams, featuring a Spartans team scheduled to include former All Blacks Paul Miller and Pita Alatini.

"Otago Boys are looking strong but I think they could get some good competition in the open grade,"  Waldron said.

"The Eels and the Southern team are looking good and I think Arrowtown might be good, as well."

Former Highlander Filipo Levi will captain the OBHS team which includes Hisa Sasagi, Aleki Morris, Sean Conner, Jonah Aoina and Slade McDowall.

The Eels have good ball runners in Mitchell Scott, Josh Casey and Kori Rupene, while the Southern side includes Bryce Hosie, Jono Hayes, Josh Ioane, Mika Mafi and Josh Walden.

Arrowtown has roped in former Otago flanker Adam Hill to boost its prospects.

Hill moved to the area last year and helped out in coaching last year as he rested a neck injury.

The competition was won last year by an invitation Barbarians team.
