The Southern Region competition is hitting the home stretch with just three rounds of competition play before the finals.

Competition leaders Crescent have the bye this weekend, which will allow teams to reduce the barrier between them.

One of the teams desperate to claw points back is second-placed West Taieri.

The defending champions have a chance to leapfrog Crescent into first place with a win over eighth-placed Clinton at Outram this weekend.

West Taieri will be heavy favourites to take maximum points from the game, which will put them in first place.

However, they are still yet to have the bye so it would not put them in pole position for the Springbok Horns for the winner of the round robin.

Third-placed Clutha return from the bye week, in which West Taieri moved five points further ahead of them, and Clutha Valley reduce Clutha’s lead over them to the tune of five.

Clutha are in a precarious position and will have one eye firmly focused on their game against West Taieri next weekend.

Standing in their way first up this weekend is a wounded Toko side who are on the receiving end of the injury curse.

Toko lost another two players last weekend, which takes their tally of injured players to over 12.

Clutha should win but cannot afford to be complacent.

Fifth-placed Owaka had their semifinal chances all but squashed last weekend, but they still have plenty to play for.

The Swamp Hens head to Heriot this weekend to take on the home side who are still yet to register a win.

Both sides are under-strength with the visitors perhaps favourites out west for the first time in many a year.

Clutha Valley host Lawrence for the Miller Cup at Clydevale.

Valley need to take maximum points from this game, and on last weekend’s form, should be firm favourites.
