Otago have crews come home from the  Canterbury championships with 78 medals, including  30 golds.

The regatta attracted about 1300 competitors at Lake Ruataniwha over the weekend.

It was a particularly strong weekend  for the Dunstan Arm  club which secured 24  medals.

The club cleaned up  in the men’s masters and was  also prominent in the  age-grades, netting several  medals in the under-15 and 16 grades. In the girls under-15  double sculls, the club claimed all three  medals.

MacKenzie Ealson  and Paige Furrie took  gold in 8min 04.55sec, Sophie Smith  and Meg Creagh came  in second, followed  by Hanna Scarlet and  Hariet Scherp in  third.The Wakatipu club  was equally successful in cleaning up the  women’s masters  races.

The  Wanaka club showed  its strong contingent  of under-17 rowers  remain a force.Its girls won medals  in the single, double  and coxed quad sculls  in that age-group,  Peta McKay being  part of all three  crews. Sam  Pearce claimed the  under-17 boys single  sculls for the club.

Otago Boys’ High  School claimed 11 medals, which included five golds. That included 2.5sec win to Ben Mason and Thomas Ryan in the men’s under-19 double sculls.

Otago  University took home several medals, as did Columba College.

King’s High School competitors, competing under North End, showed big improvements from the Otago championships and won several medals in the under-16 age group.

Notable was Nahuel Reyes Zenteno, who had a convincing 11sec win in the boys under-16 single sculls final.

Crews from Cromwell, St Hilda’s Collegiate and  Oamaru also  picked  up medals.
