Hundreds of Dunedin shoppers queued for several hundred metres to buy branded vintage clothes by the kilogram cheaper than a tray of mince.

New Zealand pop-up shop Kilo made an appearance in Moray Pl over the weekend selling brands like Carthartt, Dickies and Levis for as cheap as $20 per kilogram.

Kilo owner Adam Thompson said well over 1000 people tried to snag a deal at the American vintage clothing sale.

Dunedin was one of the busiest cities Kilo had visited with a range of customers from students to builders looking for workwear.

The merchandise was strictly sourced from Houston and Los Angeles in the United States, and it arrived in New Zealand in 45kg bales.

The items were divided into categories and stickered depending on their condition.

The cheapest clothes would go for $20 per kilogram and more expensive items went for up to $99 per kilogram.

Mr Thompson said when the clothes arrived it was a bit of mystery box type of situation and sometimes the shipments were not what he expected them to be.

A few years ago he had ordered nine bales of button-up shirts and received thousands of flannels.

Luckily flannels were popular down south and he managed to sell them all.

Mr Thompson said New Zealanders loved second-hand clothes that had a bit of character to them.

"I think it’s amazing what styles and things people are after."
