Ultimate Player and driver Ricky May are an in-form combination for the Rangiora Winter Cup tomorrow.

Ultimate Player has won twice at Addington and finished second on four occasions in his past six starts.

May, his regular driver, drove two winners at Forbury Park last night.

One of those winners, Star Of Courage, is a half-brother to The Tough Nut, whom May drove in 12 of his 15 wins.

Star Of Courage, who cleared maiden ranks, is a Courage Under Fire-Pampered Lady 4yr-old raced by Methven breeder Vic Barrett and his wife, Marion. The Barretts bought Pampered Lady six years ago after she had left The Tough Nut, whose wins included the Nobilo Free-For-All at Addington, Waikato Mile and Invercargill Cup from the Waterford stable of Laurence Hanrahan.

The Tough Nut (by Oblivion) took a record of 1.53.2 in the United States.

Members of the Fraser family attended the meeting last night when a race was named in memory of Peter Fraser. He was on the board of management of the Forbury Park Trotting Club when he died in March. His wife, Tracey, mother Dame Dorothy and sister Jenny Liddell were on hand last night.

The race was won by Aveross Blaze at odds of 57-to-one. Aveross Blaze, owned by Ross and Averil Pettitt, of Dunedin, had managed a fourth in 10 starts since he won at Oamaru in March.

• Sunny's Dream, the 2yr-old trotter owned and trained at East Taieri by Alan Clark, will campaign in Victoria this month. The Dream Vacation-All Sunny gelding won a heat of the Breeders' Crown at Addington eight days ago.

Clark said Sunny's Dream would contest the Redwood Classic at Maryborough on July 17 and the Breeders' Crown Final at Melton on August 21.

• Mr Clangtastic has come into favour on a heavy track for the Caloundra Cup today, AAP reports.

Mr Clangtastic has three wins and a second in eight starts on heavy tracks. The Les Bridge-trained Clangtastic ran on for fifth in the Ipswich Cup at his last start.

Trainer Kelly Schweida is hoping winkers will help Epic win the listed Sunshine Coast Guineas at Caloundra today.

Epic wore blinkers at his last start when he won over 1350m at Ipswich on June 18.

Epic was ridden by Chris Munce who said Epic was not comfortable on the tight Ipswich track. He felt Epic would be better suited at Caloundra. Munce also supported the decision to step Epic up in distance. Michael Walker has the ride on Epic.

Schweida said a wide barrier was the deciding factor to switch to winkers.

Munce passed up the mount Epic to again ride Benny's Buttons, who was runner-up to Torio's Quest in the Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.

Benny's Buttons is trained by Kelso Wood, who also will be represented in the Sunshine Coast Guineas by Igles Star.

• Champion jumps jockey Brett Scott is waiting on the results of prognosis scans following a seven-hour back operation on Tuesday.

Surgeons operated on Scott at The Alfred Hospital.

Scott (40) suffered spinal injuries in a seemingly harmless fall at Yarra Valley on Cox Plate day last year and has been walking with the assistance of a cane.

Darren Gauci will miss four months of racing as he recovers from a compressed fracture to his lower back sustained in a race fall at Mornington on Tuesday.

Gauci was fitted with a back brace on Thursday to assist the healing process.
