The threat of poor weather did not stop a great day out at the Kurow Jockey Club’s annual race meeting yesterday.

Club president Simon Williamson said the day had been successful, despite grey skies.

"The forecast was terrible, but the weather’s actually been good," Mr Williamson said.

"Certainly a good crowd here and everyone’s enjoyed themselves."

There were plenty of entries in the ever-popular Fashion in the Field event, he said.

"It’s not your average beauty competition — it’s about country racing and your attire that you would wear to a country meeting."

A mix of locals and visitors made up the crowd, some having travelled from as far as Christchurch to watch the action.

"We only race once a year on that Christmas circuit, and it’s always well attended," Mr Williamson said.

"It’s just the time of year really — all the locals are there."

The club day was run by a "really good crew", which made its success possible.
