Racing: On trial for cup

Hurricane Mickey will be on trial for the Winter Cup at Riccarton in the $20,000 Te Awamutu Cup tomorrow.

"We are definitely looking at Riccarton. We will just have to see how he comes through the race on Saturday," Bjorn Baker, the Cambridge co-trainer of Hurricane Mickey, said.

The D'Cash gelding has had a win and three placings in four starts since he resumed racing on May 29.

Hurricane Mickey won an open 1600m at Ellerslie on June 19.

"He is consistent and he keeps improving and the wetter the track, the better he is."

The track was slow yesterday. Michael Coleman has retained the ride in the 1580m race.

John Gray, who beat Hurricane Mickey by three lengths over 1600m at Tauranga at his last start, could make his presence felt.

Elblitzem, the topweight with 58kg, has also been entered for the $100,000 Winter Cup (1600m) on August 7. Elblitzem was the beaten favourite in the Te Awamutu Cup 12 months ago.

He was found to have cardiac arrhythmia after finishing 17 lengths last at his last start on June 5. He was required to trial and undergo a veterinary examination before he resumed racing.

He won the trial at Paeroa on June 22.

Point Guard, runner-up to Danz Star in the race last year and second to Waikeepadacash in 2007, is back for a third attempt as a 9yr-old tomorrow.

Trudy Thornton, who rode Danz Star, has the mount on Coolross, a last-start winner.
