Racing: Three-day back up for Relampago at Waimate

Relampago, who is in the open hurdles at Oamaru today, heads the field for the Waimate Cup on Sunday with 59kg.

Relampago was a last-start winner over hurdles at Riccarton on May 27. The Ben and Sally Gordon-trained gelding won the Wairio Cup at Ascot Park at his previous start.

Richard Cully continues his association with Relampago in the hurdles today. Stable apprentice Ingrid Miller has the mount at Waimate although allowances do not apply.

Courtney Van Der Werf is back aboard Windwhistle at Waimate when the 3yr-old will continue a busy season. Windwhistle won at Riccarton last Saturday in the hands of Ryan Hurdle. Van Der Werf rode Windwhistle to win at Washdyke six days earlier.

The Traditionally gelding trained at Washdyke by Mel and Warwick Coles has raced 21 times this season. He has been racing since last July when he won fresh up at Waimate.

The Wanganui-trained Queen Of The Castle is racing at Waimate in a bid to win her owners a car.

She is leading the competition to win a car provided by Te Runga Stud, Pukekohe, for the best-performed filly by Castledale this season Queen Of The Castle is trained by Stephen Crutchley, who has won races in the South Island with Woodbury Belle.

Queen Of The Castle finished fifth at Otaki on Sunday in her first race for two months. She ran third to Vincent Mangano and Celeris fresh up in the Pegasus Handicap (1000m) at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November. Queen Of The Castle won a restricted open 1200m at Woodville in November. She will be ridden by apprentice Lisa Whelan.

Queen Of The Castle is booked to cross Cook Strait this morning with stablemate Sherborne. Lee Callaway, who recently resumed riding, has the mount on Sherborne at Waimate.
