Semper Plus was an impressive maiden winner at Waimate yesterday for Balcairn trainers John and Karen Parsons in a day of mixed fortunes for the stable.

Earlier in the day the stable apprentice, Tina Comignaghi, received a gash above the knee after the horse she was riding broke a leg when working at the beach.

The horse was destroyed.

Comignaghi was due to resume race riding after being sidelined in January with a fractured wrist complicated by torn ligaments. She underwent surgery at the end of May.

"Tina has quite a few stitches for a deep cut and she will be out for another month," Karen Parsons said. "Robbie Holmes was very good helping us after the accident happened."

Parsons has some regard for Semper Plus, a 3yr-old filly by Howbaddouwantit from Grandiose having her fourth start. She is a sister to Fantastic Angel, who won twice as a 2yr-old in Sydney. Semper Plus was passed in for $17,000 when offered at the New Zealand Bloodstock 2010 select yearling sale.

She is raced by Dick Molyneux, of Redwood, who has been winning races as an owner over a period of 61 years.

He has Semper Plus leased from the Goodwood Stud operated by the Fell family near Palmerston North.

Molyneux won three races with Strike It Lucky from the Parsons stable. Strike It Lucky won a special maiden at Riccarton in November 2006 when raced on lease by Molyneux from Jim Campin, of the Chequers Stud.

Molyneux had his first win as an owner with the pacer El Supremo at the Ashburton County Racing Club meeting in April 1950.

He raced Roman Maid, winner of the 1960 Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton when trained there by John Barr. The daughter of Summertime-Virgo Maxima won the Spring Plate for 3yr-olds at the 1959 New Zealand Cup meeting, the day after Molyneux bought her for 625 guineas at the November bloodstock sale in Christchurch.

She had won two races for Harold Greenwood when trained by Kevin Thomson.

Molyneux branched into thoroughbreds when he bought Royal Sable as a 5yr-old for 140 guineas at a Christchurch dispersal sale in 1954 .The Royal Arch mare won him races at Reefton, Hokitika and Kurow when trained at Riccarton by Vic Neale.

Classic Legend, Superior Rank, Gold Tinge, Lord Manfred and Marie Celeste are other thoroughbred winners for Molyneux.
