Racing: NZ record to Bettor's Strike

Bettor's Strike lowered his New Zealand record for 2600m when he won the Rangiora Classic in 3.11.5 yesterday.

He gave trainer Cran Dalgety and Christchurch owners Jim and Susan Wakefield their third win in the group three race.

The same combination won with London Legend in 2006 and 2007.

It was the 16th win for Bettor's Strike and the $27,280 stake took his earnings to $849,290.

The 5yr-old has amassed $722,283 this season with wins in the Victoria and Tasmanian and Cranbourne (dead-heat) Cups.

Bettor's Strike had set a New Zealand record of 3.11.6 for 2600m at Addington in October.

Dalgety said Bettor's Strike would remain in work for a $20,000 free-for-all at Addington next Saturday and the $25,000 Winter Cup there six days later.

His stablemate Smiling Shard will return to work this week in preparation for the Breeders' Crown in Victoria in August.

He was spelled after finishing fourth in the New South Wales Derby Final on April 23.

Smiling Shard had won a heat four days earlier.

Barry Nyhan trained his first winner for 12 years when Barney Boy was successful yesterday.

Nyhan (72) is the owner and breeder of Barney Boy, a 4yr-old by Dancing Master, who Nyhan stands at Globe Lodge, Templeton.

The 24yr-old stallion served one mare this season.

Barney Boy is the first foal of Wisperinsands, an unraced mare by Beach Towel from Lady Alhambra, by Lordship, a champion racehorse and sire for Barry's parents, the late Don and Doris Nyhan.

Barry missed the drive yesterday when indisposed and Colin De Filippi took the reins.

Nyhan had his previous win as an owner and trainer with Right On Que, driven by Anthony Butt, at Addington in May 1998 He has only held a training licence for three seasons in between times.

Beaudiene Christian entered the qualifying group for the 3yr-old colts and geldings section of the Harness Jewels with a win yesterday.

The Christian Cullen colt took his earnings for the season to $41,476.

He is trained by Nigel McGrath, who also won yesterday with King Charlie and Limited Edition.

McGrath has Anvils Best Ever qualified for the Harness Jewels.

Trainer Dean Taylor and reinsman Mark Jones won with two of the progeny of broodmare Lilac Franco yesterday - Lilac Splash and Meads Quaff. It was the second win for Lilac Splash, a 4yr-old by mare by McArdle.

Meads Quaff is a 3yr-old by Badlands Hanover.

They are the first two foals of Lilac Franco, a Live Or Die mare who won three races.

Joyfuljoy, the winner of 11 races, has been sold to America by Ian Dobson.

Joyfuljoy numbered the group one Sires' Stakes Fillies Championship and Harness Jewels among her wins as a 3yr-old last season.
