Racing: May enhances family record

Ricky May emulated his father and grandfather when he drove Second Wind to win the Geraldine Cup at Orari on Saturday.

The win came 23 years after May drove his first winner, Ruling River, at Orari.

His father, Terry, trained and drove Deeside to win the Geraldine Cup in 1973.

His grandfather, Clarrie, trained and drove Banjo to win the Geraldine Cup in 1956.

Banjo was raced by Ricky's grandmother, Anne.

Clarrie trained and drove Diamed to win at the inaugural meeting of the Geraldine County Trotting Club in June 1950.

Second Wind, was posting his sixth win in nine starts.

The 4yr-old cleared maiden ranks at his first start for the season at Methven in September.

He has also had two thirds from a total of eight starts this season.

He ran fifth in his only start as a 3yr-old.

Second Wind led for most of the 2600m.

He won by three quarters of a length from Cullen's Creek, who tangled at the start, then raced in the open.

Second Wind is trained at Dromore by Simon Adlam for his brother Greg Adlam, of Wellington.

Greg bred Second Wind from a mating of Dream Away and Carmel Maria, an In The Pocket mare.

Adlam said he was viewing a start for Second Wind in the $17,500 Green Mile at Methven on December 13.

Adlam also produced Itz Prahda Dahling for a first up win on Saturday with May the driver.

May had delayed his departure for Sydney to drive Monkey King in the Miracle Mile until 6am yesterday to drive the Adlam horses.

Itz Prahda Dahling, who scrambled away then led over 1950m, is a 3yr-old filly by Courage Under Fire and the fifth foal of Itz In The Blood.

She raced greenly and should benefit from the experience.

Adlam races Itz Prahda Dahling with Kirwee breeders Bob and Norma McMeeking.

"The McMeekings asked if I was interested in taking her. I know the family through Adenwin, who won races when I was working for Murray Rennie," Adlam said.

Adenwin, the great granddam of Itz Prahda Dahling, won two races for the McMeekings in the late 1970s.
