Racing: Invercargill start next

Winton trainer Lauren Pearson has settled on a one-win race at Invercargill as the next start for Montecrengle, an impressive first up winner on his home track on Saturday.

"He ate up on Saturday night but I think it would be too tough starting him in the final heat of the Supremacy Stakes at Gore next Sunday," Pearson said.

"There is a $12,500 race for one-win horses at Invercargill on May 1 which is a better option."

Montecrengle led for most of the way in the hands of Brent Barclay, Pearson's partner, and won by two and a-quarter lengths.

The win confirmed his qualifying effort of 3.03.6 at Winton on February 24.

Montecrengle ran the 2400m (mobile) on Saturday in 3.03.3, the last 800m in 59.1.

His times compared to 3.04.3 and 59 for Captain Peacock in the heat of the Southern Supremacy Stakes on Saturday.

Captain Peacock worked to reach to lead at the 1600m and held off the fast-finishing Motu Crusader by half a head.

Pearson trains Montecrengle for Christchurch breeder Maurice Stevenson and Scott Mortimer, of the United States and formerly Makarewa.

"Denice Swain was training him [Montecrengle] but she had a back problem and Brent was going there to drive the horse every second day in hoppled work.

Denice suggested that we take him," Pearson said.

Montecrengle is a 3yr-old gelding by Christian Cullen from Little Egypt.

Swain won with a brother to Montecrengle, Roustabout first up at Winton in 2005.

She won two races with a half-brother, Don't Be Cruel (by Mach Three).

Little Egypt has also left the winner, In The Ghetto.

The stallion Courage Under Fire has been bought by Stallion Station from Greg Brodie.

The 14yr-old Courage Under Fire will remain in Melbourne said Danny Boyle, a representative of Stallion Station.

Courage Under Fire has stood in Melbourne for the past two years on lease from Brodie.

Courage Under Fire was originally leased by Nevele R Stud, Prebbleton.
