The 3yr-old filly Ishiabeel will attempt a feat at Riccarton on Saturday last accomplished 78 years ago in the Canterbury Gold Cup.

The last 3yr-old filly to win the race was Silver Scorn in 1932.

It was the fourth win in eight days for Silver Scorn at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November that year.

Silver Scorn won the Spring Plate (one mile) on the first day, the New Zealand Derby ( 1 1/2miles) two days later, the New Zealand Oaks (1 1/2miles) on Wednesday and the Gold Cup on Saturday.

The daughter of Silverado and Contempt was ridden in her wins by Arthur Eastwood.

Silver Scorn, owned and trained at Riccarton by George Murray-Aynsley, had 12 wins and a second in 13 starts at three.

She won the Canterbury Gold Cup by a length from her only rival Fast Passage, who had won the New Zealand Cup on the first day.

Ishiabeel is trained at Riccarton by Terri Rae.

The Ishiguru filly won the Warstep Stakes (2000m) there at her last start.

Warstep won the Canterbury Gold Cup in 1915 when trained by Murray-Aynsley.

Warstep dead-heated for first with Indigo in the 1914 New Zealand Cup and won the Auckland Cup the same year.

The Canterbury Gold Cup, a weight-for-age 2000m event, is the oldest established race in New Zealand, dating to 1855 when the first race meeting was held at Riccarton by the Canterbury Jockey Club.

The Meista, a gelding, who won as a 3yr-old last year, is an acceptor on Saturday.

The previous 3yr-old to win was Antaeus in 1985.

The last horse to win the race in successive years was Avedon, trained by Patrick Campbell and ridden in Bruce Herd in 1996-97.

• Outstanding 2yr-old filly Banchee has been sold by Hawkes Bay businessman Sam Kelt to Peter and Philip Vela of Pencarrow Stud, NZPA reports.

Banchee won the group one Diamond Stakes and the group two Matamata Breeders Stakes this season.

The sale price has not been disclosed and the Velas are understood to have not yet decided who will train the filly during her 3yr-old season.

Jon Sargent was her successful trainer this season.

Banchee is by Oratorio from Miss Jessie Jay, who is the dam of top 3yr-old filly Katie Lee.
