Kelly Thompson and Angus Mavor, who combined as trainer and rider to win the National Hurdles 32 years ago, are rivals tomorrow.
They won the 1979 race with Jack Dugan. The National was then run on the third day of the National meeting. Jack Dugan ran third over hurdles on the first day and won on the second day.
Thompson has Lautenschlager in the race tomorrow.
Mavor is now foreman for the Hunterville stable of Adrian Bull, the trainer of Borrack, who is unbeaten in four starts over hurdles. Mavor has accompanied him on his trips to the South Island to achieve the wins.
Bally Heights, who won over hurdles at Awapuni on Thursday, has joined Vamoose to represent Hastings trainer Paul Nelson in the National. Bally Heights will be ridden by Jonathan Riddell.
Bally Heights has been ridden by Richard Cully in his five hurdle races this winter. Cully is on Vamoose.
Riddell and Nelson have combined to win the National Hurdles with Just A Swagger (2005) and Just Not Cricket (2008).
Silence Please has been scratched from his engagements tomorrow. He bled on Saturday and has been stood down from racing for three months.
