"I consider him better over a mile," Michael Pitman, his trainer, said.
The Kurow Cup was over 2000m and Eel Win was allowed to settle in front by apprentice Amelia Denby.
The win completed a hat-trick of feature races on the holiday circuit for the Pitman stable.
Eel Win won the $45,000 Timaru Cup (1600m) on Monday and Coup Bloomsbury won the $11,500 open sprint at Wingatui last Saturday.
The targets for Eel Win at Trentham next month are the Anniversary Handicap and Thorndon Handicap, both over the metric mile.
The Pitman stable earlier won the Kurow Cup with Kazapo (1994 when the distance was 1200m), Snuff (1996) and Super Monarch (1999).
The stable also won yesterday with Our Mona Lisa, Vintner and Raewyn Coup.
The trio are acceptors at Waikouaiti tomorrow.
• The Totalisator Agency Board was unable to supply fields for the Waikouaiti meeting tomorrow with form updated from Kurow yesterday.
"We now take the database from New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and there is nobody working in the bureau to update the form," Paul Cavie, the racing publications administrator for the TAB, said.
• An Auckland TAB bettor has collected $776,245 from $2,850 outlaid at the Auckland Racing Club meeting at the Ellerslie on Monday.
It is a record fixed dividend payout by the New Zealand TAB.
The bettor - who wishes to remain anonymous - placed a boxed multi bet over six races and chose 57 lines at $50 each.
His final pick, Tanha Strike, won by a head after being headed in the run home.
The six horses involved and their fixed dividends were:
race 1: Fazzle ($4); race 3: Brave Warrior ($3.80); race 5: Mary's Book ($9); race 7: Green Supreme ($2); race 9: No Fear ($3.50); race 10: Tanha Strike ($3.80).
