Melbourne's fickle weather could bring a few showers down on the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup, with punters urged to pack an umbrella just in case.
The potential rain, however, will probably be more of a nuisance for the expected crowd of 100,000 with the weather bureau forecasting light showers that won't be anywhere as heavy the weekend drenching that recently soaked the city.
Weather bureau senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said there is also a chance the rain could hold off during the afternoon races.
"It won't be enough to affect the racetrack," he told AAP.
"We might get lucky right around that half-hour period, but I think the radar is just going to show scattered showers throughout the Melbourne area."
The forecast calls for winds averaging around 30km/h and a high of 18 degrees.
Punters are backing the Bart Cummings horse So You Think at $3.20 and the celebrated trainer says he will be trackside to see the Cup race despite his recent hospital visit.
The Flemington turnstiles open at 8.30am before the day's 10 races with the 3200m Cup run to start around 3pm.
