Record sales for the Mainland Air Melbourne Cup Day at the Wingatui racecourse are pleasing organisers, who expect about 8000 people to attend.

Corporate marquees and hospitality tents had all sold out this year, Otago Racing Club marketing and events manager Charlotte Neilson said.

''Ticket sales have been above expectation.''

Gates would open about 10.30am on Tuesday, and the first race was scheduled to start just before 1pm.

The last race would be about 7pm, depending on circumstances.

Miss Neilson said the weather forecast for Tuesday kept changing, but organisers remained hopeful of sunshine.

A package for tertiary students, including transport to and from the racecourse, general admission, subsidised drinks and a meal, was again being offered, she said.

Fashions on the Field is being judged this year by Otago University fourth-year medical student Deborah Lambie (22), who came third in the recent Miss Universe New Zealand contest.

Miss Lambie said it would be her first time as a fashion judge and she hoped to see clever use of colour, as well as co-ordinated accessories and shoes.

''I'll be looking for something different with the wow factor, something that stands out. Hopefully, there will be some big, bold colours.''

She planned to wear a fascinator, rather than a hat, but had yet to decide on a dress.

Other judges of the fashion event, sponsored by Arthur Barnett and Brent Weatherall Jeweller, are Dunedin radio host Nicky Rennie and hairdresser Kylie Hayes.

Registrations open at 11.30am and close at 1.30pm, when the line-up and judging will start. The parade will begin at 2.30pm and winners will be announced an hour later.
