Peter Scaife, the Foxton trainer, had his best day in harness racing with four wins on the eight-race card at the Wanganui meeting yesterday.
"I have held a licence for 30 years but it is only in the last four or five that I have got serious about training," Scaife said.
Tiz A Secret and Dream On Julie, winners for Scaife yesterday, were having their first starts from his stable after transferring from South Island trainers 10 days ago.
Dream On Julie is owned by Gerald Cayford, of Dunedin.
All About Speed was having his second start for Scaife. McPadden was the other winner for Scaife yesterday.
• Ohoka Texas was within 0.5sec of the track and race record when he won the Wairio Cup in 2.57.7, the last 800m in a sharp 54.9 at Winton on Saturday.
Ohoka Texas led over the last 1300m and he drew away in the closing stages to win by six and a-quarter lengths.
The track and race record is 2.57.2 set by Jamie when she won the Wairio Cup from a 30m handicap in 2006.
Ohoka Texas, who has the Westport Cup as his next assignment, has won three of his four starts this season since joining the Burnham stable of Mark Jones. The Christian Cullen-Millwood Touche entire won six races from 13 starts as a 3yr-old last season when trained by David and Catherine Butt.
Katie Carville, the Ohoka part-owner and breeder of Ohoka Texas, won the 2yr-old race at Alexandra Park the previous night with Ohoka Punter.
Ohoka Punter, who was having his first start, is trained by Tony Herlihy.
Ohoka Punter is by Bettor's Delight and the first foal of the Christian Cullen mare, Millwood Minisota, a winner from five starts.
Carville, who races Ohoka Texas with her daughter, Olivia, and son, Adam, also bred Ohoka Boston (Bettor's Delight-Millwood Annie) a winner at Globe Derby Park, Adelaide on Saturday night.
Jones also won with Holme Fire on Saturday. He was successful with Champagne Franco at Rangiora yesterday.
Champagne Franco, part-owned by racing commentator Mark McNamara and his wife, Katy, was having her first start. A $20,000 purchase at the premier yearling sale, Champagne Franco is the first foal of Crusader Franco (four wins).
• Frisson won a maiden trot yesterday for trainer Patrick O'Reilly, who trained her dam, Without Fear to win the 2003 New Zealand Trotting Oaks.
Frisson, a 4yr-old by Pegasus Spur, is the first foal of Without Fear.
• Monkey King is under treatment for a virus. Trainer Brendon Hill informed stewards that a blood test on Monkey King after his lack-lustre effort at Methven on December 11 indicated a virus.
• Brent Mangos had the shine taken off his win with Bettor Cover Lover in the Queen Of Hearts at Alexandra Park on Friday night when he was fined $300 for excessive use of the whip and $100 for driving with his foot out of the foot rest. He defended the whip charge.
