Racing: Back-to-back Parliamentary Handicaps

Strapped For Cash became the first horse to win successive Parliamentary Handicaps at Trentham for 21 years when he was successful under 59kg on Saturday.

It is the biggest weight carried in a Parliamentary since Kumai mastered 9st 7lb (60.5kg) in 1964.

Kumai, trained by the late Hector Anderton for Stuart Sidey, won the won the Parliamentary two years earlier with 49.5kg.

Kumai was ridden in both his wins by Brian Anderton, the co-trainer of Real Chance (maiden hurdles) and High Forty (maiden), winners at Washdyke yesterday.

Strapped for Cash, trained at Te Aroha by part-owner David Smythe, has been ridden each time by Michelle Wenn.

Laceration was the previous winner of successive Parliamentary Handicaps, in 1988 and 1989.

The Facsimile gelding, trained by part-owner, Mrs W. Lewin, was ridden in his wins by Kim Clapperton.
