Paragliding: Rough weather keeps championships grounded

Wet and windy weather grounded 70 paragliding pilots in Wanaka yesterday for the start of the national paragliding championships.

Competition spokesman Peter Groves said better weather was forecast for today and it was hoped the event could begin from Treble Cone.

The national championships are being held until January 10.

Most of the courses will begin at Treble Cone.

Paragliders will also be competing from other sites around the area.

The New Zealand event is a FAI category 2 sanctioned competition.

It has attracted a range of experienced international and local pilots and provides also for novice entrants.

Top New Zealand paragliders Harmony Gaw, of Wanaka, and Jeff Ripley, of Auckland, are defending their national titles.

Records for paragliding flights from the various launch sites are. -Treble Cone 133km, Coronet Peak 131km, Cardrona 35km, Waiorau 141km, Mt Roy 90km, Long Gully 95km, Kat West and Bryan Moore's lawn (Hawea Flat) 23km.
