More teams than before, more solo competitors, and a capacity field reached within 47 minutes of entries opening - that gives some idea of the popularity of the 12-Hour Naseby Challenge.

The R&R-sponsored event took place on Saturday and more than 800 people, from all over the South Island, took part, race director Craig Bates said.

''It just keeps getting more popular and we try and make a few changes to the course every year, to freshen it up for regular competitors. This year's course was about 800m longer than last year's,'' Bates said.

The 11km-course, through the Larchview Holiday Park and Naseby Forest, was completed 20 times in 12 hours by the top individual cyclists and the top team managed 24 laps.

The fastest lap was 27min 6sec by Logan Horn, of the Christchurch World Racing/Giant team, which won the team section.

Dunedin cyclist Mathew Lees (20 laps, 220km, average speed 19.3kmh) won the solo men's section and Floortje Draisma of Wanaka, (17 laps, 187km, average speed 16.5kmh) took top honours in the solo women's section.

Next year, the event, which is organised by Mountain Biking Otago, will mark its 10th anniversary and a few ''extras'' are planned to celebrate the occasion.
