Defender Emma Moynihan was the big winner at the Otago Netball awards at the Southern Rugby clubrooms in Dunedin last evening.

The former Sting squad member had a strong campaign for Otago in the national championship and was rewarded with the player of the year award.

The 1.78m goal defender has a fantastic ability to read games and hunted intercepts courageously to win her side a good number of turnovers.

The opposition often towered over Moynihan and defensive partner Louise Thayer, but the under-sized duo battled hard and helped Otago reach the semifinals.

Moynihan was also influential in Otago's Lois Muir Trophy team, winning the most valuable player award.

The coach of the year award went to Otago coach Nicola Jones. Jones has hinted it might be her last year in charge and said she wanted to lead the province to a win this season.

Otago lost narrowly to the highly rated Southland in the semifinal but finished poorly, losing the third-fourth play-off match to Canterbury by 27 goals.

International umpire Jono Bredin won the umpiring award, Otago B coach Lauren Piebenga was honoured for her contribution to representative netball and Alex Buttery picked up the volunteers award for her helping tournaments to run smoothly.
