Columba College captured its third consecutive title with a comprehensive 36-17 win over St Hilda's Collegiate at the Otago secondary school championships yesterday.

Columba dominated the encounter from the onset, clearing out to a 9-3 advantage by the first break.

The game was interrupted briefly during the second period with the Edgar Centre evacuated following the Christchurch earthquake which was felt in Dunedin at about 2.30pm.

Once the players were back on court, Columba was quick to pick up where it left off, stretching its six-goal lead to 11 by halftime.

Goal shoot Bridget Thayer was the star performer with 26 goals from 28 attempts and centre Sophie Napper showed her class with some fine touches.

For St Hilda's, wing attack Olivia Thomas and goal shoot Courtney Landreth played well.

Both schools have some heavyweights in their corner with former Otago coach Lana Morrison coaching St Hilda's and Steel co-coach and New Zealand under-21 coach Janine Southby driving Columba's netball programme.

Southby, however, was away on national duty and left her younger sister, former Otago Rebels midcourter Megan Graamans, to run the cutter.

While Columba dominated the final they were lucky to overcome Waitaki Girls' High School in a tense quarterfinal. Columba trailed for three quarters but dug deep to win 21-19.

In other results, Roxburgh Area School beat Wakatipu High School 26-13 in the senior B final, Mt Aspiring College beat Dunstan High School 21-8 in the junior grade and South Otago High School and St Hilda's Collegiate had to share the Intermediate title after an 18-18 draw.
