ANZ Championship competition general manager Anthony Everard has confirmed the Steel has made a request to replace a player in its squad for the remainder of the tournament.

Everard would not say yesterday what players were involved or whether the application was successful.

However, with Steel shooter Daneka Wipiiti rumoured to be pregnant, and former Steel shooter Megan Dehn believed to be training with the squad, it is easy to draw the conclusion Dehn is poised to replace Wipiiti.

"Basically, we are on record as saying we have received an application," Everard told the Otago Daily Times.

"What we have done is considered that application in accordance with the competition rules and have provided a response to the Steel. I'm not in a position to say what it was.

"The ball is very much in their court regarding any announcement on changes to their playing squad."

Steel chief executive Julie Paterson also said she was not in a position to comment but hoped to make an announcement within the next couple of days.

Wipiiti (26) has been in good form this season and helped the Steel to its biggest victory, a 66-44 drubbing of the Pulse in Wellington last month.

Her partner, Joe Tuineau, is contracted to Rugby Southland.

A Steel spokesperson said Wipiiti did not want to comment yesterday.

The Steel tried to sign veteran goal attack Dehn for a second season but its application was denied by Netball New Zealand.

However, Everard said pregnancy was considered grounds under the rules to apply for a replacement player.
