Netball: Southern B keeps semi hopes alive

Some outstanding defence and accurate shooting helped keep Southern B's semifinal prospects alive in the Dunedin premier competition.

Southern B's 53-38 victory over the winless Phys Ed B was its first of the round and it now has to beat Phys Ed A next week to clinch a top four spot.

Southern B coach Lauren Piebenga said her side had struggled against Phys Ed A in the past "but are hoping we can get it right this time and make the most of our opportunities".

"Going in as underdogs is always nice."

Southern B got off to a slow start but still shaded Phys Ed B 10-9 at the first break.

It outscored its opponent 14-9 in the second period and 14-8 in the third quarter to take a comfortable 12-point lead into the final period.

Stephanie Brenssell shot superbly, landing 35 of her 44 attempts on goal, and had good support from Grace Cooper (12 from 16) and Katrina McKenzie (6 from 9).

Piebenga said the victory was built around patience on attack and some excellent defence from goal keep Teuil Fu'ati and goal defence Lucy Hartstone.

The pair tormented their opponents and picked up some good turnover ball.

"We took a while to get going but showed good patience on attack and defended well throughout the court," Piebenga said.

In other matches, University Albion dispatched Phys Ed A 65-34 and Southern A annihilated University Albion B 77-44.

Southern A and University Albion A remain unbeaten in round three.
