Netball: Record sneaking up on shooter

All going well, Jhaniele Fowler-Reid will become the Southern Steel's all-time leading scorer in the first quarter of this afternoon's match against the Mainland Tactix.

The 1.98m Jamaican needs four goals to pass Daneka Wipiiti's 1247 goals in just her 28th match for the franchise.

Fowler-Reid has raced towards the record, taking slightly more than two seasons to reach 1244 goals.

Wipiiti - the third-most capped Steel player - took four seasons and 48 games to accumulate 1247.

Fowler-Reid was oblivious to the impending feat when the Otago Daily Times spoke to her at training this week, but could not help smiling after being told what she was about to achieve.

However, she was more concerned with her shooting in the Steel's 68-62 loss to the Swifts last weekend, when she missed nine shots.

The 25-year-old had not looked up her shooting statistics, but knew it was not up to her usual standard.

''Nine missed shots?'' she asked.

''I have not even checked because I know it was horrible. It was not like me in a game - normally it's only one or two.

''I think I was just a bit nervous because I was anticipating so much the first game. I really wanted to go hard and be successful and work hard for my team.''

If past performances are anything to go by, Fowler-Reid could be in line for another monster game this afternoon.

Her three biggest hauls are against the Christchurch-based side. She twice landed 65 against the Tactix in 2013, before scoring 60 in a 77-61 win in Christchurch last year.

The Jamaican sharp-shooter is in the final year of a three-year contract with the Steel, and does not yet know what the future holds, although

she is open to returning to the Steel for a fourth season.

''I don't really know what's going on yet,'' she said.

''I'm officially not with another team for next year. It really does depend on how this year plays out and how my life plays out.

''Family is a big thing for me, so we will have to see how it goes.''

For now, Fowler-Reid is just focusing on helping her team beat the Tactix a fifth consecutive time.

''I think what they have going for them is their attacking end,'' she said.

''But once we dominate their attacking end with our defence, we should be OK.

''I'm pretty sure that my team-mates and I are confident that we will come out on top in this game, but it's not going to be easy.''

After creating a bunch of turnovers against the Swifts last week but failing to capitalise on them, coach Janine Southby said the team had been working on ''amping'' up the defensive effort and treasuring possession at training this week.

She put Fowler-Reid's nine misses last week down to nerves, and said the shooter had been working hard at training to address it.

Asked about the Jamaican's coming record, Southby said she would be happy ''as long as she doesn't stop at four goals''.
