The province has a useful record at the national championships but it has been 13 long years since Otago last claimed the title.
The team has had to be content with the minor placings since 1998, making a habit of third, fourth and fifth.
Power, not to put to finer point on it, is fed up. She was with Otago when it finished third in 2008 and fifth last year.
The 21-year-old wing defence made herself unavailable in 2009 and missed the fourth place effort.
Bridging the gap will not be easy, but the side "definitely" has the capability, she says.
"It is going to be an extremely tight competition, especially for the top four spots. Our focus is on making the top four and, until we get to that stage, that is all we want to focus on. But obviously we'd love to break the mould and make that final."
Otago will probably need to win at least three of its five round-robin games to reach the semifinals.
The campaign gets under way at the Edgar Centre at noon tomorrow with a derby match against Southland.
There is extra pressure on the players with the game doubling as a sort of unofficial trial for the remaining spots in the Steel squad.
