Otago learned some swift and brutal lessons yesterday when it was thrashed by Auckland in the first round of the national championship.

Goal shoot Catherine Latu powered Auckland to victory at the Lion Foundation Arena with a perfect game, landing all 44 of her attempts at goal.

The imposing World 7 shooter dominated one end while long-limbed defender Anna Scarlett, returning to the city where she made her name, swooped on any hint of a loose ball at the other.

Otago actually won the first quarter, 14-13, but struggled over the final three, scoring just nine, 10 and nine goals.

Coach Nicola Jones knows much improvement is needed before Otago plays defending champion Southland in Dunedin this weekend.

"We started well and I think the key in that first quarter was sort of keeping it simple," Jones said.

"Our structures were good and we didn't seem to have too much problem getting it in to the shooters.

"Auckland are a very dynamic defensive team and I think we started to become a bit tentative when they lifted the pressure.

"We tried some different things but ultimately we just needed to look after the ball better, and our transition from defence to attack needed to be smoother."

Jones could reflect on some positives, including the efforts of goal defence Emma Moynihan and wing defence Hayley Saunders.

Moynihan, giving away plenty of height to both Auckland shooters, played with vigour and claimed a handful of perfectly-timed intercepts, while Saunders was all action in the middle third.

Experienced Otago shooters Jo Morrison and Jodi Brown showed flashes of nice play in the circle but missed the crucial shots, and the combination between Brown and wing attack Kate Shearer misfired.

On too many occasions, Otago worked hard to win an intercept and then hurriedly threw it away, when a more patient approach would have been better.

Moynihan and Louise Thayer worked hard at the back but Auckland's midcourters knew most lofted balls into the circle would be grabbed by the towering Latu.

Rawinia Everitt layed well at centre after replacing former Otago captain Debbie White at the end of the first quarter, while Scarlett reminded netball fans what they had been missing with a typically effervescent performance that included intercepts and basketball-style blocks.

The key passages in the game were the first 10 minutes of the second and fourth quarters.

Otago got sloppy and missed some crucial goals, and Auckland capitalised.

Through the second and third quarters and the first half of the fourth, Otago scored just 22 goals - well short of the standard needed at this level.

Canterbury and Southland won the other first division games played this weekend.

Canterbury thrashed North 62-52 in Christchurch, with shooter Ellen Halpenny landing 48 goals from 56 attempts.

Southland thumped Western 53-33 in Palmerston North.
