A dejected-looking Jenny-May Coffin hobbled into the press conference, her body looking every bit as wounded as her pride.

With both ends of the table blocked the Southern Steel co-captain prepared to climb over to the seat on the other side but thought better of it.

Going under was not an option either.

The veteran midcourter's body was just too stiff and sore to bend down that much.

Realising, Steel coach Robyn Broughton shuffled over to let her tired player take a seat.

Not that Coffin looked like she was enjoying the rest much.

The 34-year-old sports presenter gave it her all out on court.

But her side was pipped for the second time in a week when it was beaten 51-48 by the Canterbury Tactix at Stadium Southland on Saturday afternoon.

While the pain of defeat might have been painted across her face, the fierce competitor was a long way from throwing in the towel.

"I'm not looking for excuses . . . but it is the familiarity between players which gets you through the tough times," she explained.

"We're training enough together but we don't have years of knowing each other as some franchises do.

That will come eventually, but it is going to take time.

"When you are under pressure and you know a player, you know where you can put a ball and what they are capable of.

"We are still learning those sorts of things about each other.

It's coming.

"I know people are impatient for it.

I probably am too, but it is coming."

Coffin took defeat so hard, after the Steel's two-point loss to the Northern Mystics last Monday night she could not sleep and went over to the coach's home to talk over what went wrong until the early hours of the morning.

The Steel led by as much as eight points and was seemingly cruising to victory when the machinery malfunctioned in the last quarter.

However, Coffin promised Broughton she would not be making another late night visit after Saturday's loss.

The setback leaves the Steel with an uphill battle to make the play-offs.

With a tough assignment against the Magic in Hamilton next Monday night followed by a bye, the Steel could find itself with a lot of ground to make up.
