Netball: Injury may keep Hutton out of derby game

Steel goal keep Megan Hutton's chances of playing in the derby match against the Canterbury Tactix in Dunedin this weekend remain in the balance.

The Christchurch-based defender has been struggling with an Achilles injury in her right leg and missed the Steel's 54-47 defeat to the Magic last weekend.

Steel physiotherapist Jenny Ferguson said Hutton injured her Achilles during the pre-season tournament in Sydney and played through pain during the Steel's opening match against the Central Pulse.

"It was sore during the first game . . . and it didn't recover as well as we hoped, so the call was made not to play last weekend," she said.

The injury was a legacy from the corrective surgery she had on her ankle last year, Ferguson said.

Hutton had tried to nurse the ankle through the pre-season tournament and inadvertently placed more strain on her Achilles.

"Her ankle is a wee bit stiff, which does not help either."

Whether it would prevent her from taking the court on Sunday remained to be seen, Ferguson said.

"Megan is a really competitive person and obviously she wants to get on the court.

It was very frustrating last weekend but her Achilles has been sore, which has prevented her from training fully.

"It is day by day, really."

The Steel trained last night and will train again tomorrow night.

A decision was likely to be made after Friday's training session, Ferguson said.

The Steel has plenty of options in defence with Silver Ferns Katrina Grant, Sheryl Scanlan, Erika Burgess and converted shooter Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit all capable.

Hutton is the first-choice goal keep, though, and Steel coach Robyn Broughton said she was hopeful Hutton would be fit.
