League: Kiwis and Tonga play for trophies

Two new trophies will be at stake when the Kiwis play just their third rugby league international against Tonga on Saturday in Auckland.

New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) chairman Ray Haffenden today the Peter Leitch QSM Challenge Trophy as well as the George William Mann Medal would at stake for the match.

"Both trophies recognise the huge contribution these two men have made to the game," he said.

"We want to acknowledge the close affinity and involvement Peter has had with the Pacific Island and rugby league communities in New Zealand for many years.

"The winner of Saturday's test will hold the Peter Leitch QSM Challenge Trophy and it's our intention that it will be at stake in future internationals between the Kiwis and our Pacific neighbours."

The second award commemorates the late George Mann senior's involvement in developing rugby league in Tonga.

Haffenden said the medal would be awarded to Tonga's player of the match on Saturday.
