Players from various local clubs get ready to take part in the world's biggest hockey match at the McMillan Hockey Centre in Dunedin yesterday.
More than 260 players had registered to take part in the match, which was an attempt at a Guinness World Record.
The record was held by Kingston Grammar School in Surrey, England, which attracted 134 players to a match in October, 2013.
The match doubled as a fundraiser for two $7000 digital scoreboards Otago Hockey needed to host the under-21 national championships next month.
Former Black Sticks Women player Jenny McDonald, who played 94 tests, was due to take the field later in the evening and said the match was a great idea.
"It brings the hockey community together and it's a novel thing to do, as well.''
Admission was $20, which went towards T-shirts and purchase of the scoreboards.
About a dozen referees were due to officiate at the game, which was scheduled to finish late last night.
Organiser Shirley Gillett said official records of the game would be sent to the Guinness World Records UK office in London after the match.
