Hockey: Final spot beckons for hot Dogs

With any luck you will be able to watch the Southern Dogs on television tomorrow afternoon.

The National Hockey League finals will be broadcast live on Sky Sport 3 and the Dogs have an excellent chance of being involved in the men's final.

They play Midlands in one semifinal today with Auckland playing Capital in the other.

Actually luck will probably not be much of a factor. The Dogs have earned their spot the hard way, with four consecutive wins.

They are the only team to register a win against defending champion Auckland this season.

Black Sticks striker Hugo Inglis, who has scored five goals for the Dogs, said the team had discovered some good form at the best possible time.

''Since we've been up here we've done pretty well, so it is positive going into the semis,'' Inglis said.

''I guess the first few games there was a bit of getting to know each other and how each other plays. There were a few new guys in the team and we were working out how that gelled but now we have got things running pretty smoothly.''

The Dogs lost their first three games, although two of those defeats were in shoot outs. They got back in the winner's circle with a 4-0 win against Northland and followed up with a 2-1 win against Midlands, a 7-3 thrashing of Central and a 2-1 victory against the previously unbeaten Auckland.

But Midlands have been on the up, too. They impressed with a 5 1 win against Capital and a 2-1 win against North Harbour.

''They seemed to have gone up another gear since we beat them 2 1 and have had a couple of good results. It will be a tough one.''

Black Stick Blair Tarrant and national development squad member Kane Russell have been leading the defensive effort for Southern, while Inglis has been joined up front by Jeremy Morris, who has also popped in five goals.

Irish international Kirk Shimmins has made an impact since joining the team a week ago and unsung striker Kieran O'Connor has been in good touch as well.

While the Dogs have gone well at the tournament in Whangarei, the Southern Storm has struggled. It lost all seven round robin games and will play Central in a bottom four playoff match.
