A weekend of upsets has set the scene for an exciting final round of the men's senior A metropolitan pennant series, which will be played next Saturday.
Otago Blue is certain to qualify for the playoffs in top slot with 20 points and 33 games but in a final-round shootout, St Clair Blue, Chisholm Links and Island Park will be vying for second and third places to be in the semifinals.
One of these three teams will bow out after next weekend and the other two will compete on May 27 for the right to play Otago Blue in the final.
The first upset was at St Clair on Saturday when St Clair Gold beat Island Park by 4 to 2 games, dropping the Waldronville team down into fourth place.
At No1, Park captain Michael Minty beat St Clair junior Cameron Botting in 16 holes to post his seventh win of the series.
Andrew Hobbs at No2 added to his good record with a 4 and 3 win over Simon Murley, who was struggling, having lost the first four holes.
But that was all Island Park could manage as Ross Colquhoun, Nathan Swift, Mathew Crawford and Troy Ferguson all won for St Clair.
But the big upset was when Otago Gold beat the top St Clair team at Balmacewen yesterday, winning five of the six games.
This cost St Clair Blue any chance of being a clear second and the team may struggle as it meets Otago Blue next Saturday.
