Rain scuppers champs

Rain and a water-logged Wainouiomata course caused the New Zealand men's under-19 championship to be abandoned on Saturday.

A strong field of 144 golfers, including an Australian contingent, played on practice day but sat out the next three days without playing a shot.

The last chance of salvaging the the event was getting the entire morning field through 18 holes on Saturday.

The event championship would have been reduced to an 18-hole event, with Saturday afternoon's players competing yesterday.

Although the weather eventually cleared, the course did not become playable until late on Saturday.

This leaves Andrew Caldwell (North Otago), Travis Applegarth, Duncan Croudis, Thomas Facer and Tyrone Ratahi (all Otago) without trial scores.

The organisers are hoping for better conditions when next year's national intercollegiate and under-19 events are held in the Auckland-North Shore region.
