Michael Ormandy has resigned from the position of Sport Otago development officer and will vacate the position he has held for the past two years on Tuesday.

Ormandy (30) will start work in the Otago Golf Shop on Thursday with the aim of starting an apprenticeship in February next year.

Balmacewen golf director Shelley Duncan is pleased to have Ormandy on board to help with much of the junior coaching.

The apprenticeship will take three years with regular exams, rules and a playing component on many different courses.

Duncan said the programme was full-on and much more involved than when she qualified many years ago.

Prior to taking up the role with Sport Otago, Ormandy worked as a bar manager in the hospitality industry in Oamaru which honed his personal skills when dealing with people.

Ormandy will retain his amateur status until February and is keen to trial for Otago golf teams during the next three months.

"I want to secure a future in the game as I have always been passionate about golf," Ormandy said.

The role of the development officer has had an impact on golf in the province since it began in 2009 with the Otago men winning the SBS title in 2015 and finishing as runners-up in the past three national  interprovincial tournaments.

Both Golf Otago and Sport Otago are keen to see the role continue and the process to recruit a replacement is already under way.

The appointment is possible due to the support of Golf Otago, Community Trust of Otago and Sport Otago but funding the position is an ongoing challenge.

Sport Otago chief executive John Brimble said the withdrawal of Golf New Zealand’s funding for districts development programmes means Sport Otago had to work with Golf Otago to find other funding sources.

"The role has been very successful in Otago and has lifted the quality and standard of golf in Otago," Brimble said.

"The focus on youth development is essential and Michael has left a strong legacy which we must sustain."
