Golf: St Clair wraps up series with gusto

St Clair entered the final round of the Otago Coastal men's senior A pennant series with a very healthy lead, but put this year's title beyond doubt with a resounding 6 to 2 win over Otago at St Clair on Saturday.

The win gives St Clair 50 games and 19 points from nine games while second-placed Otago has 47 games and 16 points from 10 rounds.

The match between St Clair and Taieri was not played on the scheduled date but now the outcome is academic.

Chisholm Park finished in third place with 38 games and ten points followed by Taieri, North Otago and South Otago.

St Clair made no race of the final match with six convincing wins on Saturday.

Only Cameron Beel and Daniel Elder won for Otago.

Beel beat St Clair No 1 Brent McEwan by 2 and 1 while Elder, playing at No 7, downed Craig Scott in 16 holes.

Home team Chisholm Park secured third place with a 4 to 3 win over North Otago.

Kyle Geary won the battle of the No 1 players, beating Gary Creedy by 2 and 1.

However, North Otago No 2 John Cunningham evened the score by beating Kyle's brother Sean on the 16th green.

The match was even for most of the afternoon, with Ewan Soper putting his Park team ahead with a crucial half with Dave Lamond.

Taieri fronted with a full-strength team, giving the Balclutha team little chance despite playing at home.

Taieri won seven of the eight matches and the only joy for South Otago was when No 8 Graeme Stanbury halved with Taieri junior Hayden Reid.
