Southland caused an upset in the first round of the women's quadrangular golf tournament by beating Canterbury by a 10-to-6 margin on the Chisholm Park golf links yesterday.

Otago retained the Latimer Salver Trophy by halving with South Canterbury with 8 points each to share second place in the event with two rounds to play today.

Play was abandoned after 13 holes as many of the greens were under water and there was no play in the scheduled afternoon round.

The final two rounds will be played at Chisholm Park this morning with all of the golfers playing two matches at the same time.

Although Southland has the early lead, the outcome will depend upon double the number of matches played this morning.

Nellie Tulisi (Canterbury) won the battle of the No 1 players at four ahead of Robyn Pullar when play ceased.

But the Southland golfers won four of the next six matches and halved the other two to clinch the win.

The Latimer Salver match was a game of two halves, with South Canterbury convincingly winning the top four games and Otago finishing ahead in the other four.

Kyla Welsh (South Canterbury) was four up on Monica Tulisi (Otago) while former Otago golfer Amber Boyce beat Otago's Kathryn Fletcher at No 2.

Liz McRae, Sharni Arona, Pauline Hogue and Raewyn Devlin all posted wins for Otago.

One match of interest this morning will be the contest between sisters Monica Tulisi (Otago) and Nellie Tulisi (Canterbury), who are playing at No 1 for their respective provinces.
