New Plymouth Boys High School successfully defended its national intercollegiate title over 36 holes on the Hutt golf course in Wellington yesterday.
The winning quartet finished eight shots ahead of Rathkeale College, with Christchurch's Shirley Boys High School two further shots back in third place.
There was some excitement for Rathkeale College when its No 3, Phil Tuoro, holed in one on the tricky three-level 18th hole.
Otago Boys High School made a poor start, lying in 13th place at lunch.
However, the young Dunedin golfers made amends in the afternoon, finishing ninth, and left wondering where they could have finished with a better start.
Duncan Croudis was the pick of the Otago players with 79 and 75 for 17th place in the 56-strong field.
Vaughan McCall (Gore High School) and Mark O'Malley (Ashburton College) shared individual honours, both scoring 72 in the morning and 74 in the afternoon.
