Golf: Harper looking strong in defence of title

Cody Harper (Invercargill) is well on the way to defending his title with two good wins on the first day of matches in the South Island matchplay championship on the Levels course in Timaru yesterday.

He beat the Ashburton veteran Robbie Bell on the final green in the morning and eliminated Cameron Grant (Ashburton) in the afternoon.

Harper will meet Timaru schoolboy Tim Leonard this morning, while Vaughan McCall (Gore) will play Daniel Perham (Highfield) in the other semifinal.

McCall required two play-off holes to beat Keelan Kilpatrick (Russley) to win his second round match.

Four Otago golfers qualified for the senior championship on one round when morning play was abandoned due to a shroud of fog.

Duncan Croudis (Otago) lost on the final green to Matt Tautari (Queens Park) while Cromwell College golfer Kirk Collins was beaten by McCall in the morning.

This left Brent McEwan (St Clair) and Phil Bungard (Chisholm Park) but the pair met in the first round.

McEwan coasted to an easy victory, beating Bungard by an impressive 6 and 4 margin.

But McEwan succumbed to Leonard in the afternoon eventually losing on the 17th green.
