Golf: Facer blitzes rivals to claim Otago titles

Thomas Facer (Otago) took all the major honours in the Otago age-group championships played over 36 holes in fine conditions on the Alexandra course yesterday.

Facer (17) finished five shots ahead of nearest rival Thomas Forbes (North Otago) to win the Ken Reddington under-23 trophy and the under-19 section.

He set the pace in his morning round of 67 which included six birdies, four on the outward nine.

The only blemish during his round was a bogey six on the par-5 17th hole.

Facer steadied the ship in the afternoon at level par for most of his round ensuring no opponent could make up the morning six-shot deficit.

It was a pleasing performance from Facer (140), Forbes (145) and Scott Mitchell (150), of St Clair, helping erase the memories of Otago's lacklustre performance in the South Island age-group championships last week.

The other grades became a Queenstown benefit, with long-hitting Takashi Goda winning the under-16 title from Wakatipu team-mates Joel Pollock and Jamie Anstiss.

Sung Woo Han (Queenstown) continued the trend for the Craig Palmer-coached squad by scoring 74 and 85 to win the under-14 title by six strokes from Cody McMullan (Chisholm Park).
