Golf: Clean sweep by men's teams

Otago's golfers showed some of their best form in recent years to come away from the men's triangular series with a clean sweep at Cromwell during the weekend.

Otago won the senior event with two points and 12 games, the masters (over-40) contest with two points and 12.5 games and the under-21 event with two points and 10 games.

All three Otago teams were in good shape after the first round on Saturday but yesterday morning had to contend with gale-force northwesterly winds, which made scoring difficult.

The Otago seniors had a close call with Aorangi, Andrew Hobbs grabbing a last-hole half with Nigel Heney to give Otago the edge by 5.5 to 4.5.

Otago's top trio failed to score a win against Aorangi, with schoolboys Mark O'Malley and Tim Leonard beating Sean Roach and Cameron Beel.

The Otago tail wagged, with Mark Brooks, Mitch Bosley, Michael Minty and Phillip Bungard all posting two wins, while Hobbs emerged unbeaten with two halves.

Otago's over-40 players were convincing winners, losing only three games, with one half, of the 16 played during the 36 holes.

Stephen Hitchcox had a superb debut at No 1 at this level with 4 and 2 wins over Paul Adams (Southland) and Robbie Bell (Aorangi).

Others to win both games in this contest were Greg Johnson (No 3), Ken Shaw (No 5), Sean Geary (No 6), and Murray Edgar (No 8), while North Otago's John Cunningham emerged unbeaten with a win and a-half at No 4.

The Otago age-group team was just as convincing with 5 to 1 wins over Aorangi and Southland.

Hamish Ireland (No 1), Thomas Gillan (No 2), Duncan Croudis (No 4) and Thomas Forbes (No 6) all won both their games.
