Injury has forced golfer Michael Campbell to withdraw from next month's New Zealand Open near Queenstown.

Campbell, who has been battling a shoulder injury for several months, today advised organisers he had run out of time to be fit enough to contest the 91st Open at The Hills on April 12-15.

The 2005 US Open champion, who has not played a tournament since October last year, hopes to return to the game in April.

His withdrawal comes as no surprise because only a week ago he announced his injury would prevent him from contesting the New Zealand PGA Championship, starting next Thursday in Christchurch.

While his medical team have indicated he should be able to begin light practice in two weeks, it would not give sufficient time to prepare for the Open.

He hopes to be fully fit to contest the year's first major, the Masters, in the United States in April.

"I am pleased to report that I can see light at the end of the tunnel and the injury is responding well to the rehabilitation programme," Campbell said.

" Unfortunately the timeframe does not afford me the opportunity to be ready to play the New Zealand Open.

"This is an event close to my heart and I am hugely disappointed to be forced to miss my first Open since I was an amateur."

Campbell said he planned to head to Florida next month to begin practising with his coach Jonathan Yarwood and to continue his rehabilitation programme and intensive treatment.

He has been invited to compete in the Transitions Championships and the Arnold Palmer Invitational in late March and hopes he can be fit enough to compete in those to aid his preparation for the Masters.
