Croudis (25) turned professional at the qualifying school in Noosa in 2015 but has been given the chance to return his status to amateur effective from October 16.
He will compete in all of the Otago trials but cannot accept any prizes until his professional status is revoked.
After leading the field at Q-school in Noosa with a sensational first round of 66, Croudis looked set to gain his card.
However, a disastrous 81 in the second round cost him dearly and, despite an improved 74 in the final round Croudis failed to gain his card by two shots.
With no status and the expense of competing in various events, Croudis failed to get starts and so he has applied to New Zealand Golf to regain his amateur status.
As a professional, Croudis accepted prize money at the Charles Tour Harewood Open on October 16 last year. He must wait a year from this date to become an amateur.
Croudis graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in business and finance and has recently taken up a position as finance manager for IT company HQ.
"Otago teams have been going well lately and I would dearly love to be a member of a team winning a national title," he said.
"During my time in limbo, I have missed the thrill of competitive golf during the last two years and I now look forward to return to amateur competitive golf."
