That ever-elusive point has come tantalisingly close for the Southern United women.
The team was beaten 2-1 by Central at Memorial Park in Palmerston North yesterday, its closest game of the season so far. With both in search of their first national women’s league points, it was always a game that was likely to be competitive, and so it proved.
The sides went into halftime locked at 1-1, with Mikayla Gray scoring for Southern and Tilly James for Central. As has been the case for Southern this season, it was not long after the break that it gave up its next goal. TJ Lyne Lewis found the net to put Central up one, a lead it would not relinquish.
In other games, Canterbury United Pride beat WaiBOP 6-1, while Capital upset Northern 2-1. In the national youth league Southern United had a 4-2 win over Eastern Suburbs. The side led 3-0 at the break, with Ryan Fleming scoring two goals just before halftime. The win, Southern’s second, leaves it in seventh place on six points.
