Mosgiel flew out of the blocks with a merciless 5-0 win over Northern at Memorial Park.
With a lot of home town support, the home team did not take long to go ahead.
A fourth-minute goal was chalked off for offside, but the blue machine knocked Northern back on its heels when Andreas Hirczy scored an easy 15th minute goal to open the floodgates.
Two minutes later, the goal of the match was scored by Isaac Snell, with a brilliant flying header from a well-delivered cross by Sam Macauley.
Northern appeared short of some players who had earned decent results in pre-season.
Northern coach Lewis Houghton said he was missing a few first team players but offered no real excuses, saying Mosgiel was too good.
Connor Neil scored the first of his two goals just before halftime, and Snell struck again for the eventual 5-0 result that pleased Mosgiel coach Craig Whitson.
''We aimed for early pressure, and it earned us about 80% possession, which might have yielded another few goals throughout the match. I enjoyed our clean sheet, so a grand way celebrate the club's opening day,'' Whitson said.
At Sunnyvale, it was a much closer battle, as Green Island drew 3-3 with a more experienced Dunedin Technical side.
The Island defended well, then hit Technical on the break for a 2-1 halftime lead, with goals by Max Johnston and Cam Scott.
A superbly flighted free-kick by Ross Howard drew Technical level soon after halftime.
It was toe-to-toe for a while, with Technical looking likely, then the powerful Matt Brazier had Island support on its feet with a well-taken sprint and shot to earn a 3-2 lead.
George McCall retaliated for Tech and the match hung in the balance. Big Brazier went closest to the winner when he was fouled after a bulldozing last-minute run.
There were calls for a penalty, and it looked a good call, but referee Jeremy Samuels waved play on, and the match finished even.
Queenstown Rovers made an impressive return to the SPL with a dominating 5-1 win over Southland. It was initiated by the former Caversham striker Callum Flaws who pounced on an early mistake.
With eight new players selected, Rovers coach Jamie Whitmarsh thought it might take time to settle, but Elliott Gardner scored a rapid couple of goals to placate his coach.
Luis Paiva's Southland side hit back with goal just before halftime, but there was no stopping Queenstown. A foul on Jan Kumar earned a free-kick which he superbly slotted, then Gardner struck again, for a final clear-cut 5-1 win.
