Dunedin Technical coach Tony Martin is not expecting past form to count for much today.
The side is to host the Queenstown Rovers in its third-round Chatham Cup match at Tahuna Park.
After they drew 1-1 in their league meeting in April, the game looks to be an even match-up.
Only one place separates them on the league table: Queenstown is in third and Tech in fourth.
However, Martin said that meant little in cup football.
"Everything beforehand goes out the window, I reckon.
"[It is a] one-off game. There’s got to be a winner at the end of 90 or 120 minutes.
"So, to a degree, while we’ve played them in the league before and they looked like a pretty tidy team and pretty well organised, cup football on the day depends on the weather — everything comes into play."
Tech has proved a tough team to beat this season, although it has recorded just two league wins, along with its two cup victories.
It drew five of its first six games, its only loss coming 1-0 against a very strong Caversham team.
Martin said the team looked to stay solid at the back and maintain its shape, then go forward from there.
Despite the draws, he remained positive about where his team was at.
"We’re a young side developing, looking to find our identity.
"So these things happen when you’ve got new players in. The boys are working hard and we’re looking to improve each game."
He said the team’s new players were a mix of first-year students and youngsters who had come through the club.
"They’re enthusiastic and they’re always working hard," he said of the players.
"We seem to be learning and improving. We’re on the right path, always looking to go forward."
Queenstown, meanwhile, has recorded four wins and had a 3-2 victory over Mosgiel in its last game.
In the other cup game, Football South Premiership’s top-placed teams, Caversham and Green Island, meet at Tonga Park.
Caversham has won every game it has played this year, including a 3-1 win in its league match against Green Island two weeks ago.
Green Island has dropped its last two games after a strong start.
