Saved thunderbolt clinches premiership draw

Wanaka and Roslyn-Wakari battled to a 1-1 draw in the ODT Southern Premiership on Saturday.

Wanaka opened the scoring after just two minutes when Allan Carmichael ran on to a ball between Roslyn’s centre backs and lobbed keeper Tom Stevens.

Roslyn worked their way into the game and were rewarded on the stroke of halftime when Wanaka keeper Josh Shackleton collided with Lewis Wall, resulting in a penalty.

After a lengthy delay, Nathan Wilkie held his nerve to score from the spot.

The second half delivered slightly more chances for Roslyn with Shackleton doing well to save a Wilkie thunderbolt.

Both teams finished with 10 men after Roslyn’s Lewis Wall was dismissed and, in injury time, Paul Rodwell also seeing red.

University leapfrogged Queens Park in the table with a 2-1 victory.

Samuel Clegg’s 55th-minute winner settled the game moments after Tom Kent had levelled the score for Queens Park. The students had led at the break through Sobhan Parkoli.

Northern slipped up in the title race following a 4-2 defeat to the Dunedin City Royals.

The Royals raced to a 3-0 lead thanks to Lucas Townsend, Max Stanley and an Angus Brett own goal before Rory Hibbert reduced the deficit with a 42nd-minute penalty.

Al Julanda Al Mawali scored in the 65th minute to get Northern back into contention but they could not find the breakthrough, and Townsend bagged the winner for the Royals in injury time.

Mosgiel extended their lead at the top of the table but had to overcome a resolute Green Island team.

Green Island took the lead in the 35th minute following a quick counter-attack which finished with Finley Kruger scoring.

Mosgiel drew level in the 42nd minute when, following a corner, the ball fell to Morgan Day, who patiently waited for the ball to drop then showed excellent technique to volley home an unstoppable shot.

A minute later, Harvey Stephens finished from close range to seal a 2-1 win for Mosgiel.

In the South Island women’s league, the Dunedin City Royals continued their winning run with a strong second-half performance and a 3-0 win over Roslyn.

Tahlia Roome and Charlotte Summers gave the Royals a lead before Hannah Mackay-Wright sealed it with a late penalty.

University were beaten 2-0 by Coastal Spirit in Christchurch.

In the men’s Southern League, the Royals slipped to a narrow 3-2 loss to Ferrymead Bays in Christchurch.

En Watanabe put the Royals ahead in first-half stoppage time, but Caleb Osborne’s own goal levelled the scores in the 66th minute.

Ferrymead scored two goals in a four-minute spell, and despite Matthew Adye reducing the deficit in the 89th minute, the Royals came away empty-handed.
