Roslyn-Wakari progressed to the next round of the Chatham Cup with a 4-1 win over Invercargill side Queens Park, but only after being forced into extra time.
Roslyn keeper Peter Evans did well to save a penalty hit by Park's Tobi Reid early in the first half, and the team looked to have recovered composure when Tim Dalman made it 1-0.
But Park battled to the end and scored a late equaliser when Ryan Boyle headed in a well-delivered corner from Fabian Wanjura.
In extra time, Ben Keat put Roslyn ahead from the penalty spot and, when Dalman scored followed by Ant Hancock, the win was confirmed.
Old Boys beat Dunedin fourth-division side Redemption 4-2 in Invercargill, but the scarfie team competed well and levelled at 1-1 shortly after the break.
But the experienced Old Boys kicked on to clinch the match and earn the Churchill Rosebowl Trophy for being the only Invercargill team to progress into round two of the cup.
University player-coach James Vaughan led by example to volley an excellent opening goal that set his side up for a 4-1 win over a Waihopi side reinforced by a couple of Spirit FC players.
Vaughan went on to score again, and was joined by Sam Green and Liam McKinley on the score sheet as the scarfies broke a five-match losing streak.
Grants Braes played clever football everywhere except in Southend's goal area and squandered a truckload of chances before winning 3-0 at Ocean Grove.
At 0-0 until the last minute of the first half, Braes looked likely to be punished as the Invercargill side gained in confidence, with veteran Paul Berry initiating breaks from right fullback and captain Nick Barclay making powerful bursts in central attack.
After hitting the Southend woodwork twice, the Braes attack finally clicked when youngster Ash Hodges rammed in a well-taken goal to calm coach Allan Laidler's half-time team talk.
Luke Macris delivered a couple of perfect corners that had Southend keeper John Anderson flapping and, after a debatable own goal which might have been headed by Liam Lockhart, Braes clinched the result when Macris made it 3-0.
In a catch-up Soccersouth Premier League match on Saturday, Queenstown edged ahead of Mosgiel to win 3-2 in Central Otago.
Without suspended Colin Falvey and Shayne Danielson, Mosgiel started poorly and slipped to a 0-3 scoreline before climbing back into the game.
When all looked lost, referee Brent Best awarded Mosgiel a penalty which Michael Abbot stroked in.
Then Regan Coldicott narrowed the score to 2-3 with a morale-boosting goal.
Despite Mosgiel's strong finish, Queenstown held on for its second consecutive win, and now is equal with Mosgiel in the middle of the SPL table on seven points.
